Moschato is a coastal suburb of Athens on the Saronic Gulf, between Kallithea and Piraeus, and the seat of the Moschato-Tavros municipality. The Moschato municipal unit had a population of 25,322 at the 2021 census, within a wider municipality of 39,661. Once known for shipyards, factories, and warehouses along its waterfront, it is now home to office parks and business headquarters alongside residential streets, and has been served by a station on Athens Metro Line 1 since 1882 (renovated in 2003), with an Athens Tram stop nearby.
History
Moschato takes its name from the muscat grape once cultivated widely in the area, part of the vineyard land that covered much of this stretch of the Attic coast into the early 20th century. Urban development replaced most of the farmland during the 1920s and 1930s, accelerated by the settlement of refugees from Asia Minor following the 1922 population exchange between Greece and Turkey. The suburb's population grew further after World War II as rural Greeks migrated to Athens for work in its expanding industrial and service economy, roughly doubling between 1941 and 1981. Today the area along Poseidonos Avenue and the waterfront, once dominated by factories and warehouses, is largely given over to offices and business parks, while the rest of Moschato remains a dense residential district.
